My question is, should I switch to a Mikrotik HEX S and do the same thing, or just leave this, and instead buy a pc for logging etc. Port 5: VLAN 30 (IOT) -> Philips Hue BridgeĪll these VLANs are segregated using PFsense's firewall rules, only the management pc on LAN with a static IP has access to the AP VLAN and Management web interfaces on LAN and WAN. Port 4: VLAN 20 (AP) -> TPLink EAP Access Point Port 3: VLAN 10 (LAN) -> Upstairs Unmanaged switch Port 2: (WAN) DSL -> ADSL 2+ Modem (TPLink) -> PFsense (WAN) (Managed Ethernet Switch VLAN 99) Port 1: (LAN) USB Ethernet Dongle on Laptop -> PFsense (LAN) (Managed Ethernet Switch VLAN 1 Trunk) Internet provider is TalkTalk (20MBPS Down) (1MBPS Up), PFsense on the laptop is also doing traffic shaping which works really well. The laptop has no integrated ethernet interfaces, I use 1 usb ethernet card and VLANs to fix this. My question is: Should I buy a Mikrotik HEX S and use the laptop for other things, or not buy a Mikrotik and instead buy a Dell Optiplex 3020 from Ebay and run SecurityOnion ( ) or pfELK ( ) on it. PFsense has had a few issues like randomly dropping out, but it has been fine for around 4 days now. I have been debating in my head whether to keep my current setup (PFsense on an old laptop) or buy a 'proper?' solution, by this I mean specialised hardware.
